Eyes are one of the most important organs in the human body. They are the windows to the outside world, and we tend to take care of those windows only when the situation gets worse or when you slowly start to lose sight. It’s important to understand that losing sight gradually is not necessarily due to aging, but could also be considered as a side effect of new age lifestyles. For example, diabetes and obesity right now are both at epidemic balances and could have a major impact on your eyesight.

On the other hand, smoking and spending majority of the time working on the computers are also factors contributing to failing vision. Assessing all of the above risk factors, we could conclude by saying the common element in all is lifestyle related. Since gradual vision loss is primarily related to lifestyle, eyes could be taken care of by eating right, sleeping well and by limiting the environmental toxins.

Here are some thoughts on the risk factors, avoiding certain elements and working on improving eyesight:

Eat Right

Vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E along with minerals like zinc and copper are very important to eyesight. Antioxidants helps protect the macula from risks of sun damage whereas foods high in cysteine, sulfur and lecithin helps in the protection of the eye lens from cataracts. Omega-3 does provide structural maintenance to all cell membranes that assist in eye health.

Limiting Environmental Toxins

There are external factors contributing to damage of the eyes including florescent lights, environmental allergens, computer screens and also chlorine used in swimming pools.

Sleep

Eye health could be boosted by good sleep. A good sleep allows enough time for eyes to rest fully, recover and repair.

It’s obvious we live in the new age and the use of computers and computer related jobs are on the rise nowadays. We usually spend long hours working on computers or in fact during leisure time watch television too. These have become the routine for many individuals, and there’s no escape as it has become a part of our lives. The downside to this is vision and eye-related issues in the future. Down below, we have a list compiled that could be utilized, especially for people who spend the majority of their time on the computers.

While on job, after about every 20 to 25 minutes, you could look at objects placed far from your table and try blinking several times. By doing so, it helps you focus better.

Try to blink frequently. Normally, while at work, blink rates are reduced that could cause dry eyes. Try blinking at least 12 to 16 times each minute.

Try exercising your eyes frequently. Exercises are pretty simple. Try blinking several times, now close the eyes and try rolling your eyes both in anticlockwise and clockwise directions. During this process, try inhaling and exhaling slowly and at the same time open the eyes slowly.

Rub the palms until they become warm. Now, place the warm palms on the eyes for roughly about 1 minute. This helps to soothe the eyes and is quite beneficial.

Have frequent freshwater splashes on the face that gives both a refreshed feeling and also cools the eyes.

During breaks, try walking a few yards as it would freshen up the mind and body. It also is beneficial for the eyes as walking does increase supply of blood to the eyes.

Fixing antiglare screens to the computer monitors is advisable. Try to position monitors in a way so that monitor glares are minimum.

For those who are exercising regularly, this is good news, whereas people that still are not, it’s the right time to run that extra mile. It’s proven that regular exercise is beneficial for the eyes. To add more, there are additional benefits by exercising regularly, as the study also says patients with glaucoma could be remediated via physical activity.

The journal of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science has recently published studies that revealed causes and effects between risks for glaucoma and physical fitness. The journal reveals that exercising at higher levels has long-term benefits as it directly impacts on OPP (low ocular perfusion pressure), which is thought to affect glaucoma and a major risk factor.

The study comprised of about 6000 participants, both women and men that were aged between 48 to 90 years in order to find out if a relationship did exist between physical activity and OPP. Participants were allowed to self-assess themselves about their physical activities while at leisure and at work and categorized as moderately active, inactive, moderately inactive or active. The researchers then used the Norfolk Study utilizing three measurements in order to check IOP (intraocular pressure). Diastolic and systolic pressures were then recorded as the averages of 2 measurements were taken using a sphygmomanometer. The study concluded saying participants that did exercise moderately for 15 years did have a reduced 25% risk of getting low OPP.

One of the researchers Dr. Paul Foster (University College London Institute of Ophthalmology) says the determination of OPP is through cardiovascular fitness. He says they could not comment on the causes, but an association within factors increasing the risk of glaucoma and sedentary lifestyle was very much certain. He tells, in the previous years, glaucoma’s risk factor was IOP corrected by laser, surgery or medication. He says they believed their studies show new ways of reducing risks of glaucoma via maintaining active lifestyles, and in that way more people could participate in reducing glaucoma risks including many other worrisome health problems.

The research surely paves a way and issues warnings that exercise is imperative to not only maintain the tone and shape of your body, but also helps in keeping a check to reduce various risk factors accountable to diseases, and in this case glaucoma and eye care. So, running that extra mile is always beneficial with more pros and less cons.

Eye exercises for children are imperative and should be performed to improve their vision. By doing so, it improves the hand and eye coordination and could be useful in sports like tennis, badminton or even baseball. Many children are gifted in sports at a younger age, and by carrying out these eye exercises on a regular basis, things could further be improved when it comes to practicality of that particular sport.

Besides sports, it also helps a child to focus better and viewing the classroom board wouldn’t be much of a problem, and moreover, body balance could effectively be developed. Discussed below are some key aspects of eye exercises that are proven beneficial for children.

Impulsive Eye Exercise – Exercises such as these help children focus on a given object for lengthier periods of time. Make your child sit down in a chair. You be seated around 2 feet from your child and grab some different-shaded color pencils in your hands. Now, hold any one of the color pencil 2 feet away matching the level of the child’s eye. Make your child focus on the color pencil. Allot a time of 20 or less seconds and make your child focus on the next color pencil. Each pencil should be focused like this alternatively within a timeframe of 20 seconds or less and should be repeated at least 5 times. Once done, you could give a break and allow your child to close his/her eyes for 5 minutes.

Eye circles – Exercises such as these aid in strengthening eye muscles of your child. These are also carried out for relaxation of the eyes. Make your child lie down on the floor. Now tell your child to move the eyes in a clockwise direction. After making your child do this exercise for about a minute, instruct the child to repeat same exercise, but this time with the eyes closed. To note, while instructing your child on these exercises make sure they don’t move other muscles of the body as it would reduce eye circles’ efficacy.

Focus eye exercise – Studies reveal that children find it hard to focus on given objects. Exercises such as focus eye exercise would be of benefit to focus objects placed at varying distances. Make your child sit down. It’s recommended that you either blindfold your child temporarily or distract his/her attention while you place 4 objects at varying distances from each other. After placing the objects, you could now remove the blindfold and ask your child to trace the 4 objects. Your child should be able to locate objects placed nearby and ending locating objects placed a bit farther. This should be done with the child not moving from the place yet trying to establish objects at varying distances.

Eyes are an important aspect of our body. There’re important instructions to keep our eyes as healthy as possible and visualize the best in our lifetimes. Some of the instructions are listed below and could be utilized in one’s pursuit for healthy eyes in the later part of their lives.

A thorough dilated eye examination is imperative. We have the wrong perception at times thinking our vision is as clear as crystal, but nothing can be finalized before a visit to an eye care doctor. There’re common vision problems where individuals can’t make a decision regarding better vision either through contacts or glasses. There’re also diseases namely glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye diseases that arrive with no warnings whatsoever. Hence, a thorough dilated eye examination is very essential to detect such diseases at an early stage.

At the time of an extensive dilated eye examination, the eye care doctor would place drops into the eyes for effective dilation of the pupil hence allowing adequate light to pass through the eye. By doing so, the doctor gets a chance to visualize what’s happening behind the eyes for a closer examination to diagnose disease or any damage. Trusting an eye care doctor is the only way to know how good or bad our eyes are and making a decision on our own is not recommended.

It is also recommended to know one’s family history and talking to family members regarding their eyes is also beneficial. Diseases can also be contracted through genes and can be hereditary in most cases, so it’s always good to know about anybody suffering from any kind of congenital disorder. Research like these always keeps us updated on our health status and enables us to take a proper decision in case something needs to be done.

Healthy food habits also assist in good eye protection. There are numerous studies that show carrots are beneficial for the eyes. This alone isn’t sufficient for there are eatables to be consumed such as vegetables and fruits, especially darker leafy greens namely kale, collard greens or spinach that’s also very important. Benefits are aplenty by eating fish that have Omega-3 fatty acids namely tuna, halibut and salmon.

Healthy weight maintenance is also necessary. Obesity does increase the risk of developing systemic conditions like heart diseases and diabetes that could cause vision loss or glaucoma.

Wearing protective eyewear is also beneficial when playing outdoors, gardening or other activities at home. Eyewear such as safety glasses, safety shields, goggles and eye guards could be utilized that are designed to protect the eyes. Most eyewear lenses are of polycarbonate makes and are stronger than plastic material.

If a smoker, smoking cessation is a must. Smoking has many side effects that could deteriorate the eyes as well as many other parts of the body. Studies have revealed smoking could lead to risks of contracting macular degeneration in older ages, cataracts and nerve damage thereby leading to blindness.

When outdoors, wearing shades is recommended. Wearing sunglasses is great fashion, but at the same time, it’s good to know that they are 99-100% UV-A &UV-B radiation protected.

Resting the eyes periodically is very important. Spending long hours in front of a computer or trying to focus on an object forgetting to blink at times could make the eyes fatigued. There’s an eye rule called 20-20-20 that could be tried. While working on a computer, it’s advisable to take a break from one’s gaze and focus on objects 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This helps in reducing eyestrain.

Last but not the least, hands and contact lenses should be cleaned periodically. Hands must be washed whenever deciding to put contact lenses in or out. Care should be taken to disinfect lenses as per instructions and replacing the same as appropriate.

Aspheric contact lens is a lens having profiles and surface angles, which do not form a sphere or a cylinder. Non-aspheric lenses, on the other hand, possess similar curves around their entire surface like that of smooth rubber balls. The aspheric lenses are capable of achieving similar refraction as the non-aspheric ones; the only difference between the two is that the aspheric contact lenses are a lot flatter and slimmer.

Eye specialists prescribe aspheric lenses to individuals with borderline astigmatism. Due to their slim and flat structure, they are often called as ‘premium lenses’. The price of this contact lens variety is also more than other varieties of lenses.

The aspheric lenses can be of two types, hard and soft. Again both these types of aspheric contact lenses are available as disposable, daily and extended varieties. You can choose the type that suits you the best. You can also consult your eye specialist while selecting the right contact lens variety for you. As the aspheric lenses are prescription contacts, the most commonly used types are the ones meant for extended and daily use. This is because the users of this type of lens need their vision to be corrected at regular intervals.

People wear prescription lenses mostly for correcting refraction errors in their eyes. The main task of the prescription lenses is altering the mode in which the refraction occurs in the eyes; in this procedure the vision gets corrected. As the aspheric lenses are slim they can adjust with the structure of the unique curves of the eyes of respective users much easily. Other than that, unlike the non-aspheric ones, this lens type also interfere a lot less while we blink our eyes.

Currently around 70 million people in the world are victims of glaucoma. This eye condition ranks pretty high in the list of common causes of vision loss. Some experts believe that exercising regularly reduces one’s risk of developing glaucoma. Exercises are also often used as a part of comprehensive treatment programs of glaucoma; however, once diagnosed with glaucoma, you should perform exercises only after consulting your physician.

Glaucoma is primarily caused by increase in eye pressure or intraocular pressure, which damages the patient’s optic nerve. Glaucoma can occur due to unknown causes like cataracts, tumor, inflammation, diabetes or eye injury.

Glaucoma can be of two main types, primary open-angle and acute angle-closure glaucoma. Exercising regularly helps in reducing the intraocular pressure of patients suffering from open angle glaucoma. Regular exercise also improves the flow of blood in the optic nerve and retina of these patients. According to eye specialists, patients diagnosed with open angle glaucoma should perform jogging or other similar aerobic exercises for 20 minutes every day. This will help in reducing their intraocular pressure by 1-8 mm Hg. Lifting free weights is also recommended by some doctors. The intraocular pressure of glaucoma patients practicing weightlifting gets reduced by as much as 14.4%. People leading a sedentary lifestyle before being diagnosed with glaucoma are also benefited immensely by using exercising as a tool of reducing eye pressure. It has been found that exercising for only 3 months can offer them significant results.

According to medical experts, aerobic and isokinetic exercises are the two most effective exercising forms for patients with open angle glaucoma. The isokinetic exercises include movements made at controlled acceleration; examples include: operating stationary bicycles set at a particular speed, exercising on special weight-training devices etc. The aerobic exercises can be defined as the exercise form that increases our pulse rate by 20-25%; examples include walking, jogging, running on the treadmill etc.

The procedure of making contact lenses depends on the kind of lenses. In this article we’ll be discussing the process of making two main contact lens types, gas permeable and soft.

Soft contact lens :

While making a soft contact lens the manufacturer ensures that its flexible properties are retained; this makes this contact lens type extremely comfortable on our eyes. The first step of making soft contact lenses involves arranging water absorbing plastic polymers; this kind of plastic polymer is referred to as hydrophilic polymer. The next step is cutting of the polymer in a shape resembling that of a button. For cutting the polymers into the required shape, both molds and computerized cutting tools are used. Then, the button like structures of polymer get shaped to form the regular oval shaped lenses. The lenses are then hydrated for ensuring that their softness and flexibility are retained. The soft contact lenses are manufactured matching a particular edging, curve, size and lens power. Finally, these lenses are stored within plastic packages that contain sterilized saline solution. This saline solution mimics the features of our tears.

Gas permeables :

A gas permeable contact lens is much less flexible compared to a soft contact lens. These lenses are not made using hydrophilic polymer; instead they are manufactured using a plastic that allows oxygen to penetrate through it. Wearing gas permeable contact lenses will ensure that your eyes are receiving adequate amount of oxygen. This feature of the gas permeable lenses makes them extremely comfortable for the eyes. Gas permeables are usually custom-made. So, before ordering a contact lens for you, you will need to get your cornea measures by an experienced eye care professional. First, the plastic gets shaped like a rod and then the rod is cut to form button shaped structures. Next, according to the specifications stored in the computer, a computerized cutting tool manufactures the contact lens.
